FAQs
What are basic costs to fix or install a garage door?
Typical ballparks: springs ≈ $350+, new door ≈ $1,400+, new opener ≈ $450+. Final pricing depends on door size, hardware, insulation level, and onsite conditions.
How long do parts last?
Door: ~25–30 years with maintenance. Rollers: ~5 years (usage-dependent). Springs: ~10 years. Openers: ~8+ years.
Should I DIY a broken spring?
No—torsion systems are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury. It’s often more dangerous to remove a broken spring if a second spring or a stuck cable is still holding tension. Leave it to a pro.
Why does my garage door feel so heavy?
You should be able to lift it without strain. If it’s “heavy,” a spring may be broken, out of balance, or undersized for the door weight. We re-tension and/or spec the correct spring.
I can’t see my spring—where is it?
Some Wayne Dalton doors use a TorqueMaster system that hides springs in a tube. When these fail, the whole torsion assembly is typically replaced (springs, cable, torsion shaft, drums, end brackets).
Why is my garage door noisy?
Most noise comes from worn rollers; hinges, tracks, and bearings also contribute. Upgrading to quality ball-bearing rollers and a tune-up usually quiets things down.
Is an insulated garage door worth it?
Often yes—especially for attached garages, rooms above the garage, a quieter operation, or if you spend time in the space.
Can I add insulation to my existing door?
Yes, but added weight usually requires larger springs and a balance check so the opener isn’t overworked.
Why are there springs along the sides of my door?
Those are extension springs. It’s an older but functional system and can be serviced or replaced.
How do I extend the life of my door?
Every ~6 months, lubricate rollers/hinges/bearings (petroleum gel works well). Every ~2 years, have the door re-aligned and balanced—especially in Houston’s shifting clay soil.
Can I convert two small doors into one big opening?
Yes. The main cost is structural framing for the new header; we’ll assess onsite and provide options.
